Testosterone Replacement Therapy FAQ

Get the Answers You’ve Been Looking For From Our TRT Doctors

Are you considering testosterone replacement therapy? If so, you probably have some questions. Testosterone replacement therapy treatment is not a decision you should make lightly. Take time to meet with our TRT doctors and learn about what this treatment can do. Here you can find some answers to frequently asked questions about testosterone replacement therapy. You can also call (330) 267-1090 to ask your questions directly.

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that regulates male sex organs. It is produced in the testes and is responsible for many things in the body.

Testosterone is responsible for:

  • Building bone strength and density
  • Improving mood and energy levels
  • Regulating sex drive
  • Building muscle mass
  • Red cell production
  • Fat distribution

What happens when you have low testosterone?

Low testosterone production, also called hypogonadism, impedes a man’s sex drive and energy levels, increases irritability, and increases body fat while reducing muscle mass. Over time, low testosterone can result in more serious health concerns such as heart disease and diabetes.

How do I know if I have low testosterone?

In men, testosterone production starts to decline in their 30s. This reduction continues year after year, particularly free testosterone, but is an expected part of aging and may or may not cause symptoms. Some men, however, experience more significant drops in testosterone production and can experience symptoms directly related to low testosterone.

You will need to have a blood test so that the doctor can check your testosterone levels. At Advanced Age Management, we offer free low-t assessments followed by thorough labwork. These tests are simple & easy. The results come in quickly.

What is testosterone replacement therapy?

In this testosterone replacement therapy, testosterone is pumped into the body using gels, patches, injections, or medication. Our center uses injection therapy for men who are in need of more testosterone production.

What are the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy?

Testosterone replacement therapy can improve your mood, sex drive, memory, and muscle mass. It can also improve circulation.

Are there side effects with testosterone replacement therapy?

Any form of hormone therapy comes with the risk of side effects. It is important to keep hormones at “normal” levels, which is why only a few men are recommended testosterone replacement therapy.

Some possible side effects of testosterone replacement therapy include:

  • Increase in red blood cell production
  • Acne outbreaks
  • Infertility
  • Sleep apnea
  • Fluid retention
  • Breast enlargement

These side effects are not normal and you should report them to your doctor immediately. It could be that you are receiving too much testosterone and need to wean off treatment. Furthermore, anyone with breast or prostate cancer should never receive testosterone therapy.
